Premise:
The first idea is a way to improve on Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation for cars. The way that GPS navigation works is by using satellite signals to figure out where a GPS device is and calculating data on its movement, generally just speed and direction. This works fine for me, until I hit less-than-ideal conditions. Other times, I’ve driven along regular stretches of road and had my device fail to find a signal, leaving me without directions. I’m not sure whether it’s just a bad unit or there are actually problems with the GPS “network,” but this got me thinking about workarounds to the issue I have.
The concept:
Replace or augment the current technology in navigation devices with a camera-based system. The navigator is placed on the dashboard, and a connected camera looks outside the windshield. Elements of what it “sees” (signs, buildings, trees, and so on) are compared to a database of pictures from around the world. The device accurately pinpoints its location based on the things the camera sees and where these things suggest the device is. For example, the camera sees a Starbucks logo somewhere on the left side with a tree behind it, a single yellow line on the pavement (meaning it’s a two-lane road), and a gas station on the right. Using technology like a face-recognition system for landscapes, the device compares the image to the ones it’s indexed. It quickly finds a match and determines the device’s location based on that match.
Besides this, navigation from point A to point B is pretty much the same. The device figures out the fastest way from one place to another based on the built-in map data it has (which should be identical to the map data on the GPS systems people have today, but separate from the pictures in the maps).
The pros:
Google Maps’ Street View feature as well as image services with geotagging have made the foundations for a database of images that systems can match against what they see.
No satellites to search for means constant access to accurate location.
This technology does not necessarily require new hardware. An iPhone app may be the most practical proving ground for a developer.
By crowdsourcing maps, current pictures taken by the navigation devices can allow easy updates and natural growth for a system. If a device is in an area with pictures that don’t quite match the indexed ones in the database, then the user can upload his/her device’s pictures to replace the database’s old ones.
In a similar vein, road map updates (and weather and traffic updates) are made easier and faster. Pictures from devices confirming that there is road construction, for example, signal that there is an issue with with the current map. “Seeing” snow and a large number of cars is an organic way to confirm the driving conditions, which are snowy and congested in this case.
Reporting aggressive drivers may be done more accurately, and possibly even automatically.
Counting the number of users who pass a billboard may be useful to the advertising industry’s media and metrics sectors. Collaboration with marketers may open up new possibilities.
The cons:
I’m guessing that it would take a lot of processing power to figure out exactly where a device is, especially at night. This technology is likely a long ways off into the future. It would likely start with an in-the-cloud approach at first, followed later by computations being performed on the devices themselves.
Until pictures from all over the world can be stored on one device and updated at short intervals, this system could run into the same connection issues as GPS. Those pictures have to be stored on a server, then uploaded and processed live by the navigating hardware. The result then needs to be sent to the device. If there is ever no connection between the navigation hardware and the server, then the device is crippled. On the other hand, it may be possible to make up for this at times with a built-in GPS.
Landscapes are constantly changing, so each location in the database needs to have pictures for various weather conditions. Additionally, updates must be made more frequently during times of construction in an area.
There may be a few glitches if different places have similar features.
Like with the last one, a picture dilemma may exist with long stretches of highway. On the plus side, a built-in memory may be useful. If it can remember that it most recently passed mile marker 52.9 on highway X, the navigator can be relatively precise in its location-finding.
If the system operates with still pictures taken at intervals (as opposed to a constant video), the built-in camera must have a high shutter speed. Otherwise, blurring will occur in images taken when the vehicle is travelling quickly.
Buying a car from an individual or from a local car dealer is one tedious task if the objective is to purchase a second car that is still in good running condition. A buyer would never trade his hard-earned money with just a complete wasted used car. Whether new or used, when buying a car, it should be treated with the same importance and value.

Funny as it may seem, the most neglected thing in a car are the seat covers. Most people are fascinated with what their cars look like but tend to neglect its interior facilities; much less its auto seat covers. Basically, auto seat covers were not invented without any purpose. Auto seat covers are just as important as any other part of your car.

Some one lakh of them. All over Bengaluru’s roads. Driving without manners. Thinking they have the ultimate authority to do what they want. Try putting some rules and they immediately come under the umbrella of Shankarnag and, welfare association presidents who are in reality nothing more than goons. The question is why must the government succumb to these Autocrats. One time, and every single time after that. For years together. There is no one single place where you CANNOT find an auto under a no parking sign. They park under that as though it’s their birth right. They park right at signals, they park at bus stands, they park everywhere else other than auto stands. Is it time the government started considering 10-auto per stand rule every 100 metres? We can then have auto lined avenues instead of tree lined ones, considering the already depleted vegetation in the city. Hopefully every alternate 100 metres can then be used for buses and two wheelers. Unless of course another two lakh autorickshaws are given permits. Wake up Yeddy, do something to this before the problem goes out of hand. Then instead of trucks lining outer ring road, we’d have autocrats lining them one day.
I’m hooked on Sweet Spot. The 2009 set features my favorite base design yet – and I’m keeping track of ‘em all as opposed to 2008 when I sent most of them out as part of trades or stuffed away in the closet. I’m not actively pursuing the entire set, but I’d definitely like to complete it down the road.
However nice the base may be, this product is all about the hits. In my last pack I pulled a short printed Sweet Beginnings autograph of Trevor Cahill and watched as my dad pulled a Derek Jeter/Ken Griffey, Jr., dual swatch. Good stuff! There were still three packs left if the opened box at my shop on Friday, and the owner mentioned that the sweet spot auto hadn’t yet been pulled… foreshadowing? You betcha!
I pulled a sweet spot autograph of Mr. Sweet Spot himself, Chad Billingsley:
He’s a decent enough young pitcher, and I’m not going to be picky about which sweet spot autos I pull, but I still had hoped for a slightly bigger name. I’ve watched countless breaks of this stuff online, going all the way back to the ‘07 tins, and I feel like Billingsley appears more than any other player. This particular card is numbered out of 199, so it’s not like it’s any more common than any of the other autographs in the set, but I really do feel like I see this card (or the very similar 2007 version) ALL the time. Maybe it’s just me…
May as well scan and display the far less exciting base cards:
My apologies to Mr. Sizemore, whose head I’ve lopped off for the sake of a rectangular scan. I’ve had a nice run lately when it comes to pulling good cards out of packs and boxes, and I’m enjoying it while it lasts.
GM began to pay back its U.S. & Canadian government loans today, sending $1 billion to Washington and $192 million to Ottawa & Toronto.
According to GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre Jr., the company plans to repay both governments in full by the end of June – assuming the economy doesn’t take a turn for the worse.
GM owes the U.S. government a total of $52 billion, with $6.7 billion of that in loans (the rest comes from the U.S. government’s equity position of roughly 61% in the automaker). It also owes $1.4 billion in loans to the Canadian and Ontario governments.
GM probably could have paid back more had talks to sell its Saab brand of cars to a Dutch automaker not collapsed this week…
This marks the third time this year that a deal by GM to sell an unwanted brand has fallen through.
The machining and engineering of the block and balancing of the assembly has finally been finished.
I’ve published a list of costs below, so that anyone contemplating rebuilding a Mopar small block can get an appreciation of the costs involved. Pics of the rotating assembly will follow shortly.
Salibas were very reasonable on price, and my builder got me a good deal.
Time frames were “OK” but I think there’s a general rule of thumb with engine re-con places – they work to their time lines, no-one else’s!
Crack check, sonic check and clean $240.00
Line Hone block $258.50
Index and clearance grind the crank $275.00
Bore and Hone with torque plate $352.00
Balance complete assembly $330.00
Deck block $121.00
Cam bearings R&R $88.00
Total $1662.00
I also brought in a new shipment of parts this month, and among customers items, I brought over two sets of rocker gear – some 1.6:1 Crane alloy rockers and some 1.5:1 Comp stainless rockers.
My builder and I will see if the installed height of the valve springs and Piston to Valve clearance will accomodate the 1.6:1 ratio, if not, I’m more than happy with the 1.5:1 Comps!
I also have two more sets arriving in January, which I will sell on top of whatever I don’t use for my engine. These sets are another set of 1.6:1 Crane Golds and a set of Harland Sharps!
Kepler Motors is about to pull the veil off it’s new road smashing supercar the “Motion” @ the 10th annual Dubai International car show. featuring a all-wheel drive Dual Powertrain Technology (DPT), Ford EcoBoost twin- turbo 3.5-liter V6 , plus a 250 hp electric motor driving the front wheels, so what does this mean? it mean’s it launches the “Motion” to 100 kmh (60 mph) in under 2.5 seconds with a top speed of over 300 kph (200 mph)

If you read the previous post, you have a pretty good mental image of what is going on in our shop right now- tires and wiper blades. Well, since that last post, we have had our first real winter storm (not a ton of snow, but enough to wreak some havoc on the roads). We had just a dusting of snow two days ago, and yesterday brought about an inch or two of snow; however, with this small bit of snow came temperatures in the teens and wind gusts in excess of 50 mph. And today, the high temperature is supposed to be only 11 degrees. Right now this morning, it is 2 degrees with the wind chill at -20 degrees. And let me tell you, it is very windy outside, which doesn’t make it feel any warmer.
So now that you have an idea of what it feels like to be outside in Chicago when it is the middle of December, think about ICE and what ice means for your daily routine. This first one is a little off topic, but some of you may have learned this the hard way. You wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning to take a shower before work. You look outside and see a wet, shiny glaze covering the streets and a light grayish smoke coming from the roof of every house. There are no birds flying around, no squirrels running around. Yes, it looks mighty cold outside. You walk into the bathroom to turn on the shower, but no water comes out. Whaaat? Yes, your water pipes are completely frozen from the bitter cold outside. Looks like no shower for you right now! (A good way to prevent your pipes from freezing is to leave your sink faucets on a slow drip overnight. A slow drip will not waste a large amount of water, but it will help to prevent your pipes from freezing.) Fast forward a little to where you walk outside to leave for work. Now, there are a couple of different things that could happen here. First, if you park your car in a garage overnight, you could walk out to find that your garage door is frozen shut. Uh-oh, not good. Or, if you do not park your car in a garage overnight, you could walk up to your car to open the door and your door will be completely frozen shut. Interesting. So how do you get to work if your garage door or your car door are frozen shut? Well, there are de-icers on the market but they won’t do you any good if you don’t have them when you need them. They can’t de-ice anything by sitting on the store shelf!
Now let’s get to the actual car itself. Cars don’t like when the temperatures drop below freezing to a brutally cold point. Just as you don’t like standing in the freezing cold, neither does your car. Gas freezes (it is best to have a full tank of gas when it is brutally cold), hoses break, springs snap, batteries die and engines finally give up on trying to start. That’s where Rennology comes into play. The past couple days (in addition to all of the tires and wiper blades), we have received numerous calls about cars not starting (or cranking) that have to be towed in. And all of these cars that don’t start, well, when they get towed in and dropped off, we have to push them inside. So the past few days, we have all been putting on, taking off, putting on and taking off our jackets, gloves, and hats. Each time one of the technicians are ready to start working on a “no-start” car, we gather up our outerwear, layer up, and make our way outside to push, push, puuuuush the car into the shop bay. It is actually an interesting sight! (I am usually the one to steer because my muscle index would not contribute anything to the pushing of the car!)
Now, we have pretty much started to feel the effects of winter. The blustering cold, the numbing winds, the salt-spreading, the ice on our windshields. Yep, that’s winter. The no-starts, the broken hoses, the dead batteries, the snapped springs, the frozen doors and locks. Yep, that’s winter through Rennology’s eyes!
- Scaunele oricărui automobil au, din punctul tău de vedere, intenţia de a se da înapoi singure de fiecare dată când cobori din autoturism… Trage scaunul cât mai în faţă, cât să poţi atinge volanul cu bărbia şi tetiera cu ceafa în acelaşi timp;
- Nu purta centura de siguranţă!!! Şifonează rochiţa;
- Asigură-te că ai oglinda. În poşetă;
Motorul a pornit!
- Nu te uita în oglinzi, virează brusc şi accelerează în continuare. Cu cât pleci mai repede, cu atât sunt şanse mai mici să se întâmple ceva;
- Te claxonează un idiot care nu ştie de “prioritatea femeii care iese din parcare”? Arată-i degetul mijlociu şi bolboroseşte ceva înspre el. Poţi spune orice, cât timp pare că spui ceva rău. Exemplu: “Multe cuie, ursu-i moşulbălţii, mulgi bascula”;
- Trebuie să încerci să păstrezi o viteză cât mai inconstantă… Acest lucru se face prin apăsarea pedalei de acceleraţie în ritmul muzicii. Un exerciţiu amuzant. Poţi ţine ritmul tobei apăsând frâna, iar ritmul chitarei apăsând acceleraţia;
- Observă axul drumului. Are nişte linii pe el. Încearcă să mergi deasupra lor;
- Condusul este un joc pentru majoritatea oamenilor. Vor exista bărbaţi care vor intra în jocul tău şi vor încerca să te depăşească. Arată-le că nu eşti o uşuratică. Bagă-te în faţa lor;
Autoturismul are o baterie.
7) Prioritatea de dreapta – ce-i aia?
băiat să te ajute să alimentezi;
- intră să plăteşti. Nu uita să te uiţi 15 minute după muţunache de pus în geam. Cumpără câţiva;
- du-te la maşină, lasă maimuţoii înăuntru şi intră din nou… Ai uitat să cumperi brăduleţi parfumaţi;
- ignoră înjurăturile şirului de maşini care aşteaptă să îţi muţi maşina de la pompă. Sunt invidioşi că ai găsit un loc de parcare mai bun decât au găsit ei;
- cumpără 5 brăduleţi de culori diferite, aranjează-i frumos, 2 la oglindă, 1 în torpedo, 2 agăţaţi de barele tetierelor;
- încearcă să fii originală. Parchează la unghi de 47 de grade, chiar dacă restul autoturismelor sunt parcate la unghi de 90 de grade;
- ocupă cel puţin două locuri de parcare. Cine ştie, poate cea mai bună prietenă vine în vizită şi nu are unde să parcheze;
Swung by this event for a bit Sunday afternoon. Gordon Sprague is like Gulf Breeze’s answer to Jay Leno, and he was auctioning off most of his private collection over the weekend. Among the cars being auctioned was a 1969 Dodge Daytona that was driven by Bobby Allison.
The show was pretty cool; not only was there a nice selection of beautifully restored vintage cars, but there were innumerable lots of car and automotive-related incidentals; from tools to gas pumps. I wanted to get a pump to put up in the corner of my room, but as I was lacking both sufficient cash and an unoccupied corner in my room, I had to pass.
Just like Ballon Boy and former US president George W. Bush, a Flash game about someone’s “moment of misfortune” was bound to happen sooner or later. In this case, Tiger Woods has become the latest celebrity to be in that kind of games. It’s not an EA Sports one and probably one he would not like to play.

When California Vehicle Code Section 22350 is cited as being the primary collision factor for an auto accident in California, and the person found to be in violation of this Vehicle Code Section is the other driver involved in your accident, this can greatly assist a personal injury lawyer in settling your accident insurance claim for a substantial settlement or even the policy limits if your injuries are extensive. This is even more true in the case of fatal accidents which cause one or more fatalities. Although a traffic collision report is not evidence, insurance companies treat them as if they are as discussed below.
However, due to how insurance companies treat individuals without an attorney, a person injured in an auto accident should always retain an attorney to represent them at the earliest possible date after an accident. Unless you haven’t been injured and won’t be needing medical treatment, an experienced and reputable personal injury lawyer will almost always be able to obtain a considerably larger settlement from an insurance company and a larger amount for you, even after the attorney’s fees and costs are paid.
At the Law Firm of Sebastian Gibson, we work on a contingency fee basis, which means that unless we obtain a settlement or judgement in your case, there is no fee payable to us. Even if we’ve incurred costs, such as the costs of obtaining your medical records, no fee is payable to us, unless we obtain a settlement or judgement in your favor. Starting with the personal injury consultation which is also free, and which can be by phone or in person depending on our mutual availability, you never receive a bill from us on any case we take on contingency. Unlike other attorneys who ask you to pay the costs involved with your case, we simply don’t believe you should have to pay those costs yourself.
We’ll also advise you how to obtain reimbursement for your car repairs or if your vehicle is totaled, for the value of your vehicle, and any amount you receive for the vehicle is yours to be used by you for the repairs or to replace your vehicle. At the Law Offices of Sebastian Gibson we never take any portion of your property damage settlement and we can also advise you how to obtain payment for a new child safety seat if one was in use at the time of the accident.
California Vehicle Code Section 22350 provides:
22350. No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.
When a Police or CHP Officer, or a Sheriff’s Deputy states in his or her report either that the primary collision factor in an auto accident was one party’s violation of a certain vehicle code section such as the one above, and that one of the parties is at fault for violating that code section, the Officer or Deputy is stating what he or she believes to be the underlying cause of the accident.
The reason insurance companies treat the collision reports as if they are admissible evidence is that they know if put on the witness stand, the investigating officer or deputy will almost always testify in a manner consistent with the conclusions in his or her report. That testimony becomes evidence and will often sway a jury in their determination of fault for an accident.
While an investigating officer’s job is to determine if there was a violation of the law and not to determine who should be at fault in a civil dispute such as a car accident claim, insurance companies often view these two determinations as one and the same.
A police officer assigned to investigate the scene of an accident does not have the role that a trier of fact does in a courtroom. The officer is not there to render a verdict and determine who is responsible for the damages. Rather, the officer is there to determine if any laws were broken. The officer makes such a determination based on his or her having seen the damage to the vehicles, and having spoken to the drivers and the witnesses when their memories are freshest. He or she is thus often in a position to make a well-educated determination of who caused the accident.
Unfortunately, despite the experience of most investigating officers who are dispatched to the scene of an accident, sometimes mistakes are made by these officers. Quite often one or both parties to an accident will lie to them and an officer or deputy will not always be able to determine which of the parties is telling the truth. The evidence from the scene, while important, may also be misleading as to what actually occurred to cause the accident.

Sometimes an Officer or Deputy cannot determine with any degree of certainty which party was at fault and will cite two possible Vehicle Code Sections, one for each party in a two-party collision, that may have been violated. In that case, the Police or CHP Officer or Deputy will often state that the primary collision factor is unknown.
Even if there are witnesses to an accident, the Officer of Deputy may discount the statements of some or all of the witnesses if they were friends or relatives of one of the drivers.
Although, as stated above, the conclusion of fault by an officer or deputy does not carry the same weight as a determination of fault by a judge or jury, the importance of the citation of this or any other California code section in the police report is that insurance companies treat the conclusions in these traffic collision reports in a great majority of cases as if the conclusions were written in stone and evaluate a party’s claim based on the findings of fault in these reports.
A traffic collision report may be amended by the police department or the CHP where it contains obvious mistakes, such as when the officer or deputy has mixed up the names of the parties. Supplemental reports are sometimes written when new evidence comes to light, such as when a hit and run party is located. But for the most part, most police departments, Sheriff’s offices and the California Highway Patrol will not amend a report when a party complains and states why he or she doesn’t feel they should have been found at fault for a collision. They will, however, in most cases allow a person to fill out a Counter Report, which, unfortunately simply does not carry much weight with an insurance company.
If the Primary Collision Factor for an accident is unknown, one should look on the traffic collision report to see if the Police or California Highway Patrol Officer or Sheriff’s Deputy cited any “Other Associated Factors” in the traffic collision report as having had a role to play in causing the collision. There may have been faulty equipment, as with some truck accidents, or the roadway itself may have been dangerous.

A violation of California Vehicle Code Section 21753 is one of the Vehicle Code Sections that can be cited as being the primary collision factor for an auto accident in California. This is true whether the accident only caused injuries or if the accident was a fatal accident which caused one or more fatalities.
California Vehicle Code Section 21753 provides:
21753. Except when passing on the right is permitted, the driver of an overtaken vehicle shall safely move to the right-hand side of the highway in favor of the overtaking vehicle after an audible signal or a momentary flash of headlights by the overtaking vehicle, and shall not increase the speed of his or her vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle. This section does not require the driver of an overtaken vehicle to drive on the shoulder of the highway in order to allow the overtaking vehicle to pass.
